The Human Nervous System

About 9% of the population may harbor an autonomic disorder requiring medical attention, or about 30 million people in the U.S. (American Academy of Neurology).

The autonomic nervous system is involved with virtually all diseases. Management of the patient with suspected autonomic dysfunction includes routine and specialized clinical tests to evaluate sympathetic and parasympathetic involvement, and determines the proper course of treatment.

The goals of clinical evaluation are to identify the presence, distribution, and temporal pattern of autonomic dysfunction, specify the involved components of the autonomic nervous system, and of special importance, to detect treatable, serious disorders.
