Botulinum Toxin Injections
Botulinum Toxin is a powerful neuromuscular blocking agent which is used to treat different focal spastic diseases and excessive muscle contractions, such as dystonias, spasms and twitches. Botulinum Toxin can be used to reduce spasticity or excessive muscular contractions to relieve pain, to assist in posturing and walking, and to allow better range of motion. This causes local paralysis so that the selected muscles can be treated.
It is also used for migraine headaches but not all insurance companies will pay for this at the present time.
For patients demonstrating successful response, the effect of the injections generally lasts for three months.
